The logbook of the brig Chase is a seaman's whaling journal detailing a whaling voyage from Rochester, Mass., to the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores, Grande Island (Rio de Janeiro), and return to Rochester, Aug. 1839-Oct. 1840. The brig's home port was Rochester; the master was Matthew Mayhew; the logbook keeper was mate George Bliss. The logbook includes reference to African American sailors; examples of poetry and sea songs; watercolor paintings of ships, signal flags, whales, and profile views; a crew list of the merchant mariners on board; whale stamps; and equipment and supplies aboard ship, specifically provisions. The logbook is detailed and includes a list of 43 ships spoken during the voyage.
